We use a wide variety of methods to ensure that our clients continue to move consistently toward their goals. We adjust the difficulty of the exercises, and the motor sophistication requirements. We play with the density of the workouts (the time it takes to do an equivalent amount of work). We use single versus double limbed variations on exercises. He's come to accept his genetic talent for weight gain. I've made lots of mistakes on the path to discovering the methods we now employ — but I wouldn't trade those mistakes for the world because I've learned an important lesson from each and every one of them. I now have the privilege of passing these lessons along to my clients, and to you.

Myth #1 - Chronic Cardio Is Best For Fat Loss

I used to run so much my neighbor started calling me The Gazelle. The funny thing is, though I poured countless hours into my fitness pursuits, I constantly struggled to maintain my physique. All that work also came with the even bigger challenge of remaining injury-free.

It seemed like I was always nursing some nagging ache or pain. But the moment I slacked for just an instant, the old mid-section would begin to sag and I would gain weight. Do you know the feeling? Maybe you, too, are sinking into the quicksand of “chronic cardio.”

It turns out there was a good reason for my lackluster results. The latest research has demonstrated that the best way to burn fat is through short, intense exercise sessions coupled with efficient muscle building workouts.

Myth #2 - You Need Carbs to Fuel Exercise

Nope. Of the three “macro nutrients”—carbs, protein & fats—carbs are the only one you absolutely do not need. The body has no physiological need for carbs. But if you don't eat protein or fat, you will eventually die!

I used to eat two to three bowls of cereal in the morning with yogurt. The yogurt was probiotic and the cereal was of the “healthy” variety. As far as I knew, I was making a great breakfast choice.

Understanding this fueled a fundamental shift in my physique. This one change in perspective turned my former “lean weight” into my current “heavy weight.”

Myth #4 - Work Plus Rest Equals Success

I'm sure you've heard this one before, or something like it. The industry pays a great deal of lip service to the idea that you need adequate rest for optimal results. But it isn't true.

That's right, you don't need rest.

What you need is RECOVERY. You need to actively recharge and rejuvenate your body. You need to balance your training by strengthening in the opposite direction of your principle conditioning work. You need to ensure the health and mobility of your joints.

I know this because I learned the lesson the hard way. I spent years driving myself into the ground with strength training and conditioning without compensating for it. But it finally caught up with me.

I remember giving a workshop in Singapore several years ago. One of my students was a yoga teacher, and I asked her to take me through a routine. We started in a simple posture, seated on the mat with our legs stretched out in front of us. To my horror, I couldn't sit up with my back straight. I either had to slouch, bend my legs, or support myself with my hands behind my back.

Myth #5 - Losing Weight Is All About Willpower

There was a time when I was so desperate to get lean I would have tried anything. If I heard about some “new” way of losing fat, no matter how extreme, I'd give it a try. One month it would be cutting out fat from my diet. The next month it would be high volume cardio. It was all in the name of the GOAL—never about the process. I didn't have a big picture plan to build a new lifestyle. I wasn't enjoying the process. And needless to say, none of it ever stuck.

Well, that was decades ago and I've learned a lot since. The lessons I've internalized have helped me and my clients develop habits that deliver long term health, performance, energy and — of course — physique. Just as I've done for myself and my clients, I want to give you a plan.

An ancient wrestling culture in Iran, the Pahlavani, made extensive use of bodyweight conditioning methods in their training. One famous wrestler, Pahlavan-e Bozorg Razaz, did as many as 1,000 Shena (a form of push-up) per day as part of his conditioning regimen.

As early as the 5th century BC, physical culturists from the wrestling traditions of the Indian Peninsula based their training heavily on bodyweight exercise. Some of these movements are now making a comeback, and the Bethak (Hindu Squat) and Dand (a form of swooping “push-up”) are popping up in the vocabulary of savvy exercise enthusiasts.

You might be surprised to learn that the training methods of these rugged Indian wrestlers were tightly intertwined with the practice of yoga in its more ancient, rigorous form. Our imported Westernized version of yoga tends to emphasize the yielding side of the discipline, but that's only half the equation. Few people realize that the Yogi of old were as strong as they were graceful and flexible.
